With the introduction of the new educational program at the Amsterdam School of Architecture in 2022, several new units were developed for the first semester. One of these — Scenography — required particular attention, as both its importance and its definition within the field of architecture remained somewhat unclear to students.

For two consecutive years, SVESMI partners have run the studio BedSpace, following a consistent framework and developing a prototype for the scenography unit. This two-month program combined a variety of exercises and formats: four consecutive assignments introduced students to the fundamental aspects of a scenographic approach. Working with time and temporary structures, understanding the fluidity of movement in space, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and designing with reference to historical precedents are just some of the skills the unit emphasises.
